Shell Petroleum deploys USV for Pipeline Survey in Nigeria

This mission marks the longest single operation ever undertaken by the Shell Group, lasting a total of 166 hours in the shallow waters of Nigeria

In a groundbreaking move, the Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria Ltd (SPDC) has utilized an uncrewed surface vessel (USV) for a pipeline survey in Bonny, Niger Delta. This innovative approach not only saves time and money but also ensures the safety of both personnel and the environment. This mission marks the longest single operation ever undertaken by the Shell Group, lasting a total of 166 hours in the shallow waters of Nigeria.

Increased Productivity and Environmental Benefits

SPDC’s chief surveyor, Steve Keedwell, highlighted the advantages of using the USV for the survey. The deployment of the USV led to enhanced productivity, improved data acquisition, and a significant reduction in CO2 emissions by 97%. The vehicle’s diesel-electric design played a crucial role in achieving this environmental milestone.

Collaboration and Capacity Building

The success of the survey was made possible through collaboration with various stakeholders, including the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission, NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services, Nigerian Content Development and Management Board, Nigerian Navy Hydrographic Office, and Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.

This partnership not only demonstrates SPDC’s commitment to supporting local businesses and developing Nigerian talent, but also highlights the importance of technology transfer and knowledge sharing in the oil and gas industry. By investing in training and empowering local operators, SPDC is not only ensuring the sustainability of its operations in Nigeria, but also contributing to the growth and development of the country’s economy. This collaboration serves as a model for how international companies can work with local vendors to build capacity, create jobs, and drive innovation in the communities where they operate.

Developments Ahead

SPDC’s general manager, Lanre Olawuyi, expressed enthusiasm about the future of survey operations in Nigeria. The innovative approach used in the Bonny survey has garnered interest from the oil and gas industry and beyond, indicating its potential for widespread adoption in the country. SPDC remains committed to supporting Nigerian companies in technology adoption and innovation to drive progress in the industry.
